Barbara Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

Spanish > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

a la que se la da cuerda

Context:

Es una cajita (metrónomo) con forma de óvalo y tapa morada a la que se la da cuerda con una manivela extraíble que se inserta en su costado derecho.

The answer of Dr.Neil TechTrans  See profile was rated best

wind it up

My comment:

like a wrist watch, you wind it up (a spring mechanism inside which stores the energy as potential energy and slowly releases it as kinetic energy, thus moving the metronome) and the clockwork is then 'powered'.
