anamaria crowe serrano (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

Spanish > English

Subject:

Arts / Entertainment

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

Nictides

Context:

This term appears in a poem. The "Nictides" are the Daughters of the Night in Greek mythology, just as the Oceanids are the Daughters of the Sea. But I can't find a collective reference to them in English. I've found "Nyx", the main daughter of the night. Anyone know what they're called collectively? Thanks.

Nyx's children

My comment:

I found no collective name either, I suggest you leave the title as such, Nictides, and only translate the remainder, perhaps as "The daughters of the night", as I think has already been suggested. The only alternative I can think of for the title would be, as above indicated, Nyx's children.

Couldn't find any one-word English equivalent of "Nictides" after browsing through the web.

Children of Nyx

My comment:

I would not use daughters, since many of them are men, such as Moros, Hypnos, etc.
To my knowledge, Nyx or Nox is the godess of the Night, not a main duaghter.
I hope this all helps.

Gracias Margarita.
