les colonies originelles

My comment:

Assuming we are speaking about the US, in colonial and pioneer times, almost all there was was "back East". Beyond this was the frontier, Indian lands, lands belonging to France and Spain, and unexplored territories. Also, the many who flocked to California for the gold rush could speak of their former abode as "back East". This is not to be confused with "down East", which would be only the state of Maine. Would there also be a possible similar "back East" in Canada?

My references:

High School and College US History and geography.
