It can mean "open" = not covered or "opened" = opened up, cut in or open, or similar, or something comletely different!?
It may as well refer to the fluids or liquids!?

The only ting I can think of, since you don’t mention what kind of material you’re talking about, is that it refers to “open material” as opposed to “covered material”, “ouvert” in this case being the opposite of “couvert”.
