My comment:

"avalage" means "faire descendre." In this case, I think it means that one has to apply pressure on the joint while assembling. If you have a picture, this may help confirm my guess.

This word avalage could mean so many different things. It is mainly used with the flow of liquids (avalage de salive, avalage d'eau, etc).
In the case of a joint in a pipe, I can think of no other answer.

Couldn't find much of anything, but in one of my technical dictionaries, "avaler" can mean to "sink down a shaft." Found a lot of hits for "joint shaft" "automotive." As you can easily tell, this is more of a guess than anything else.
