En 1980, un Ronald Reagan risueño/alegre se aprovechó de la repugnancia/del asco ocasionad(a)(o) por el malestar que resultó de los años de la presidencia de Carter.

My comment:

Carter was considered a weak and ineffective president when in power during the late 1970's (although in recent years he has been instrumental in forming diplomatic relations with foreign leaders).Reagan's style was the exact opposite of Carter's so the American people elected him in a landslide election. He took an aggressive and hardline position with foreign powers that did not want to acquiesce with his demands. To tell you the truth, he struck me as being quite cocky in his expression at times. As far as a lot of Americans were concerned, Reagan was the antidote for America's weakened image under Carter, a way to gain international respectability. Reagan took advantage of that fact to get elected.
