My comment:

I'd go for picnic lunch as, although packed lunch is very common usage in the UK, it always reminds me of the sandwiches I took to school, not a posh lunch put together by a hotel! I wouldn't say picnic basket though, as that's just the basket, not the food inside.

Yes-I would think "packed lunch" would be more for a school child or an employee who "brown bags" it. It's my understanding that picnics are very popular excursion s in Europe. I'm going to take a picnic lunch on an excursion with a colleague, up into the Appennines in Italy. Can't wait!
