My comment:

The first suggestion is correct, but I would make it a bit more "German" - leave out the "legal" (rechtmäßigen) as there is no "unrechtsmäßiger Stand der Ehe".

If you want to include it, I would say "in den GESETZLICHEN" Stand der Ehe
