My comment:

What term you chose depends very much on what IMPRESSION you want to give - i.e. a legal "finding out" or a secretive "spying" on the competitor. It COULD mean the entire spectrum but most generally is simply "finding out what the competition is doing" by entirely legal (and often "open") means.

Auf Grund der Regionalität der Anbieter kennen sich deren Mitarbeiter meistens gegenseitig. Ein Konkurrenz-Gang ist deshalb schnell als solcher identifiziert, jedoch lässt man sich im Normalfall gewähren.
