The school/college was a large building with corridors full of girls like me, wearing blue tunics, and carrying portfolios

My comment:

This reminds me of my school days my school used to wear blue and white tunics

My comment:

'briefcases' is more literal but less likely for schoolgirls

who, like me, wore/had on a blue tunic and were carrying paper folders

My comment:

I think "tunica" just refers to part of what they wore, a tunic-style blouse or short blazer type jacket.

When I say "paper folders," I am referring to those folders, usually of bright colors, that students use for carrying around and organizing their loose leaf papers.

blue uniforms and backpacks

My comment:

She is saying that her uniform is a blue robe, and I don't know of any better way to call the school-book bag (formerly leather and hanging from one shoulder).

My references:

I hope it helps. Good luck.
