Substitute of el Principal in these adventures

My comment:

It is a figurative sentence, that means that El Tacón was the substitute in this kind of performances.
"Relevo" have the sense of the race (relay).
The word "lides" is the plural of "lid" = pelea, lucha, encuentro. And in this case it looks that is used like in the sense of bull fighting (also a spectacle)"fue una gran lid" (una buena faena). Because it doesnt have the same sense in English, I suggest to put "adventures" instead.
