to grind loosely / (or) unattached

My comment:

Schleifen ist: to grind, can auch polish sein.
Es handelt sich vielleicht um einen Edelstein, der nicht "gefasst" ist.?

cut and/or polish the stone to remove any unwanted layers, leaving the stone smooth and pure

My comment:

"schleifen" in this context means to cut and/or polish

"freischleifen" means to cut and/polish a stone in a way that it "frees" the stone i.e. removes any layers of other material or dirt the stone may be covered by, or even unwanted parts of the stone itself.
literally "freischleifen" means to free (the stone) from (whatever is covering it) and leave it smooth and pure.

My comment:

A technique in grinding/polishing of precious stones? (not very sure, but see ref.).
