Josephine Cassar  See profile asked this question:

Language pair:

Italian > English

Subject:

Other

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

IVA, servizzi e tasse compresi

Context:

Same menu: problem is that I see these as repetitive.

Keywords:

The top of the menu said that Coperte, Pane e grissini=3,500. and IVA is not VAT? It was not charged when there was the Lira as currency, no? Tks

The answer of Chiara Balboni  See profile was rated best

VAT, services and taxes included

My comment:

The terms are not repetitive.
VAT is just one tax. Restaurants and hotels may be subject to other taxes, for example a tourist tax. VAT has always existed and it was charged even when the Italian currency was the Lira.
It is a normal statement that tells the customers that the prices they find in the menu are final prices and no additions must be made (except the "coperto, pane e grissini"). Also, in Italy we do not give tips at the restaurant.
