Il était dévoré de honte. Dix ans qu'il n'avait pas appelé son ami Dominique, dix ans qu'il n'avait pas bu un verre ou plaisanté avuc lui. Dix ans que celui-ci venait au milieu de nulle part, rue de la Grange-aux-belles sans doute tous les jours dans ces locaux improbables, diriger il ne savait quoi.

Just wondering if the literal translation might work. Could you tell us why you wrote two different things "au milieu" in the title and "au milieu" in the text? Which is it?
