Para los padres, implicaba un gasto de dinero importante, tanto que se lastimaban hasta Navidad, época del año en la que el derroche es mucho mayor. Sin embargo, siempre estaban las abuelas, que ayudaban todo lo que podían y más, y te habrían el bolso para que contases los billetes.

I think there's a spelling error and it shoud be "abrían" el bolso as in "abrir" instead of "haber" So I would propose, "they would open their their purses so you could count the money"
