Context:

Mientras tanto, un público de unos cien alumnos - entre los que había visto el impacto y los que acudieron a ver el espectáculo - veía como aquel imbécil (no se lo decían a la cara pero era conocido por sus meteduras de pata y tortazos varios que habían hecho historia en el instituto) le salía sangre de la boca.

My comment:

"meter la pata" is colloquial for doing something that should not have been done, either an error or some indiscretion.
