- balance carrée : contrôle d'une série d'opérations en s'assurant qu'un même résultat (en général un total) est bien obtenu par deux méthodes différentes ; cette opération était fréquemment pratiquée au temps où les additions se faisaient manuellement, et où l'on les vérifiait en additionnant un tableau tantôt par lignes, tantôt par colonnes). Synonyme : contrôle carré.
