Solo nel "giardino" della brigata, e nella figura di per sé ancipite di Filostrato questo incontro è possibile proprio perché la sua identità antitetica ("vivendo [ ... ] mille morti sento": IV, 2, 2) fa parte della tradizione lirica e dell'autobiografia, ed è tutt'uno con il codice amoroso, a cui continuamente rinvia.
