Ponti di pietra erano stati costruiti che dai Babilonesi, a partire dal VI secolo a.C, ma solo dove erano indispensabili.

Stone bridges had been built only by the Babylonians

My comment:

IMHO in the source text there is a missing word: "non". The Italian construction should go: "Ponti di pietra non erano stati costruiti che dai Babilonesi". This concept is true according to history, because in the VI th century nobody but Babylonians were able to build stone bridges, and only where necessary, as they habitually used rafts to transport goods and people along and across the rivers. I wish you find my comment useful. Cheers.
