My comment:

From the Council of Europe French-English legal dictionary: "cause is always the undertaking given by the other party, ie the existence of consideration; legal basis, legal ground; consideration; cause; proceedings; case."

It seems to me that "dans la cause" is literally "in the case", or in legal terms "a part to the action". HTH.:)
