My comment:

'lines of force' is a term used within physics, meaning (imaginary) lines connecting forcefields, but is not common in English outside this context. Obviously 'lignes de force' is used in a much more general sense in French, but I think that you could translate it here by 'forcefields' , which is used in a metaphorical sense in English, ans would mean, here, roughly, those important issues, problems or whatever that 'tug' at, or structure, the mind.
