Quando se afere, o máximo que se pode fazer, se for caso disso, é apor a marca de aferição; quando se calibra, tal como muito bem diz, além de se aferir, pode ser necessário dar o calibre conveniente a determinado objecto, por exemplo uma boca de fogo. Portanto, não são sinónimos perfeitos, que aliás são raros.
