Wie bei einem Autokauf z.B. muss man eine bestimmte Summe anzahlen um einen Vertrag fuer den verbleibenden Betrag zu bekommen.

I'm sure this is the word - it's even included in dict.leo.org. I assume this is a rather typical situation with a down payment, right? I suppose in a rather obscure situation, one could have a different word for down payment, perhaps, but in all the situations I can think of, it's Anzahlung.

Il y a également le termes "les arrhes", mais attention la différence entre une avance et les arrhes c'est que les arrhes ne sont pas remboursables si jamais le contrat n'est pas conclu!
