The eminent cardinal
My comment:
Nicolas de Cues was one of the most important and original thinkers of the fifteenth century. A philosopher, theologian, canon lawyer, mathematician, church statesman, and cardinal, this translation text is referring to his abilities and achievements not a special title. So the use of either great or eminent cardinal would be correct. Personally I would choose eminent cardinal.
