When vendors provide software, they usually also offer "support", which includes updates and general troubleshooting, bug-fixing etc.

Software pflegen und aktualisieren ist eigentlich nicht das gleiche: das erstere wuerde ich auf jeden Fall als software maintenance uebersetzen und das letztere mit entweder upgrade oder update software; to upgrade wird meistens benutzt wenn man eine neue version eines Softwarepakets installiert (z.B. to upgrade a system from Windows 98 to Windows 2000); to update verwendet man eher wenn Daten, die sich veraendet haben, auf den neusten Stand gebracht werden: e.g. to update a database record
