Not much different from the previous two answers I agree, but in this case we are talking about design of motors in general, and then about the specific alteration in design when dealing with the specific constraint of shortened body length.

The German in not correct or a poor translation. If you replace "bekannt" by "üblich", it's correct. Otherwise the sentence should read:
...bekannt, dass ... verlegt wird.

In any case it means that it's known or comon to position the bearing unit in / within / next to ...
