filter rating

My comment:

The filter rating, usually given in mervs (google merv), determines the particle capture capacity and the types of particles captured.

particle retention

My comment:

This is an uncommon term ... found an instruction manual in English and German with this term - reference below

English: The HEPA filter has high efficiency particle retention of up to 99.97%,
German: Der HEPA-Filter weist mit einer Partikelaufnahmefähigkeit von bis zu 99,97 % eine große Wirksamkeit auf

A native speaker's comment on the suggestions from Rupert and Elfi: they deserve to share the points! 'retention' is definitely better than 'absorbing' in this context, but the addition of 'capacity' is a significant improvement.
