My comment:

I don�t think there is an exact English equivalent, because the history of the "freie Theaterszene" is specific. But I have found "independent" in several Google sites.

806,000 google hits for open stage theater. It is the theatrical equivalent to "open-mic" night. I am a native speaker (USA) and I have never heard any term except "open stage."
