optional courses/free-elective credits

My comment:

The difference I have seen is that usualy optativas means you have to choose one subject from a group of two or more. You choose which one you take and it is needed to obtain the degree. In the case of libre eleccion it doesn't affect your ability to graduate wether you take them or not... hope I was clear enough with my explanation. Regards.

electives within the major field of study; general electives

My comment:

Barbara--Maybe you can come up with a better way of phrasing this. I think this is the difference. Have you tried looking at the University's website?

I agree, "optativas" are "optional courses" and "de libre eleccion" are "free choice courses".
