According to a 2000 recommendation by the HRK (German Conference of Colleges of Higher Education) as part of the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), gut=good, befriedigend=satisfactory (see references). However, many colleges give other equivalencies. New study regulations passed under the Bologna Process will typically have a "Diploma Supplement" containing a table of equivalences. If it exists, it should be used. Otherwise guess/lie ...

My comment:

Or just lie.

However, I would reserve "excellent" for "ausgezeichnet" / "hervorragend"

I think the listing above would be more correct- eventhough the AE version truly sounds better!
