Como el texto indica que se hacen "preguntas de seguimiento" (follow-up questions), esto me hace pensar que primeramente se hacen o se responden preguntas preliminares (cuestionario), aunado a la atención que se presta a las señales no verbales, conlleva a aumentar los datos recopilados...

En cuanto a "preguntas investigadoras", creo que no va por ahi la cosa....

probes normally is translated as muestras, Depending on the type of research that is carried out this muestras can be "encuestas" , or other type of muestras or probes , e.g. biological probes, medical probes, like blood or tissue, or statistics
