Meaning: ...but History winked...
For example: History didn't get it right or lied... but winked.... ( a bit like "cross your fingers' (fazer figas) when we lie )

Clin d'oeil means "wink" but it means as well a brief moment, something that happens in a fraction of a second. Coup d'oeil in Portuguese is "olhadela". Hope this helps.
