Not sure about "undone" (as undone by their own ambitious military conquests) I thought that the scale of the military conquest might have contributed to their demise.

Yes, but there is no idea of "repeated" for each empire, rather for the whole process of building and destruction. It's "major" or something like that - "empires and nations have been built and destoyed through major military conquests"
