"la giornata di questo ragazzo sia divisa tra due problemi seri, anzichè resti unitaria nel consolidamento della sua ignoranza della vita."
this boy's days were to be spent pondering two serious problems rather than simply spent consolidating his ignorance of life

I think 'day' needs to be in the plural in this context, and I agree with Daniele that the whole sentence needs to be rephrased.

My comment:

Penso che sarebbe una buona idea formulare una frase con "single", da opporre appunto alla divisione a 2 menzionata prima.
Ad esempio: ...instead of having only a single experience that would foster his ignorance of life (è solo uno spunto, certamente esistono frasi migliori)
