il Phrasal Verb contiene l'idea di scavare per estrarne un disegno, una figura, e pertanto un senso intrinseco che deve essere portato alla luce mediante una personale rielaborazione

Secondo me quindi non si dovrebbe tradurre alla lettera.... La traduzione potrebbe essere, a seconda dell'ulteriore contesto, una tra quelle proposte.
