In this context making a comparison between material objects however it can also be used to compare say,skills: e.g Gli artisti di salsa colombiani non avevano gran che da invidare a quelli cubani

meaning that Colombian salsa artists can be considered equal in terms of musical skills to Cuban ones

My comment:

This is the general meaning: there wasn't much between the rooms in terms of their style, opulence, etc. The rooms in palazzo Ferrajoli could hold their own compared to the others.
