My comment:

literally on the lines of 'Allied strand', I'm guessing, IOW a strong contender for an alliance with the monarchy.
However, this is only a guess, so if anyone is better informed please don't diss me or give me a lecture on semantics or WW2 history!

BTW, my father would probably kill me if he knew the depths of my ignorance...I only found out when he was dying that he was the official interpreter for the negotiations between the King of Italy and Allied Command :-O
