Catar tiene un sentido casi en desuso que es sinónimo de mirar o buscar.

I think "catar" is stronger than just "mirar". In movie scenes, when somebody walks through an asylum ward, he looks, a bit panicked, at all the lunatics' faces but he feels that the lunatics are staring, not only at him but into him.
