C'est la réputation que lui font ses adversaires qui est mentionnée dans le texte. Comme l'adjectif est associé à hard, je pense qu'il s'agit d'une qualité de combattant ici.

When you are "généreux sur le terrain" it means that you don't spare your efforts in order to win the match.
