The sport mentioned is volleyball, not rugger or American football: I am not sure "féroce " applies to a volleyball player.

D'habitude j'approuve à 100%, mais là je ne suis pas d'accord avec toi: à quoi sert cette qualité sur le terrain face à des adversaires? C'est la réputation que lui font ses adversaires qui est mentionnée dans le texte. Comme l'adjectif est associé à hard, je pense qu'il s'agit d'une qualité de combattant ici.

Another (amusing) expression to refer to a player who does not spare hie efforts is:"il n'hésite pas à mouiller le maillot" (de transpiration).
