Solo dopo due giorni de calma piatta, tornò a spirare l'aliseo. Ma il mare era grosso e veniva di prua, cossiché in ventiquattr'ore riuscirono a percorrere solamente nove leghe.

Or came over, but breaking has a sense of being more violent. Would crashing be an overtranslation?
