Barbara R Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

à forts enjeux de position

Context:

It is hard to make objective decisions rife with hierarchical takeovers

My comment:

I am of the view that when there is a chance of being replaced being objective can be blurred into being subjective.

in an environment where your hierarchical position is at stake

My comment:

I think that "enjeu de position" does not just mean the regard or fear due to your rank, but also the possibility of going up or down the hierarchical ladder. If you are career-minded, you will say or suggest something that will please your boss or belittle your rival in your boss's mind.

where there's so much importance attached to your position [in the hierarchy]

My comment:

The register of "high positional stakes" is clearly too high in this instance. Maybe "where the stakes are high in terms of [your/ones] position". A tricky one.

in an environment where position is tantamount

Where (position counts a lot)

My comment:

I just feel that a direct translation like ''with real position stakes'' does not really make sens. But from the context of the text, I think it is all about the difficulty of making good decisions in perhaps an environment where all eyes are on you and ready to criticize you for the least mistake?
