Barbara R Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

ont fait le plein de super

Context:

"have given their all"

My comment:

Think this is a good colloquial translation, as in making a maximum effort (as expressed in the "full tank of petrol"metaphor of the French.

I don't agree about the tense: it does not mean that they have given their all, but that they are ready to give it.

Yes, you're right, I missed that one in my haste! The sense is of course that they are "fully gassed up" and raring to go.

are firing on all cylinders

My comment:

Not literal, but another motoring metaphor!

I gave you my literal translation on the assumption that you hadn't understood the expression (as some here offering versions clearly hadn't!) but I like 'firing on all cylinders', which will read more naturally to an anglophone

(by 'you' I meant Barbara of course - as presented here it reads ambiguously. Apologies, Amanda.)

By the end of meeting the participants are more than over filled with the number of speakers, with suggestions

My comment:

It sounds like an all day seminar and everybody is tired of advice, of speakers, of each other etc.

have filled up with super

My comment:

in other words, top grade petrol - you could say 'filled up their tank with super' if you want to make the metaphor even clearer
