My comment:

"s'oxygéner les neurones" usually refers (for instance) to a student who has been revising/reviewing for his exam for too long and goes out for a breath of fresh air, or watches a good film"pour se changer les idées". In the context, it refers to a change in the way of thinking, of going about a problem, an issue. It does not mean train one's brain even more.
