Barbara Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

cette spirale vertueuse de dons

Context:

Les mastermindiens doivent aussi intégrer la logique de « l’autre avant moi » ou de « donner avant de recevoir ». Chacun doit venir avec l’intention de donner plus qu’il ne va recevoir lui-même. C’est cette spirale vertueuse de dons, d’abord pour l’autre, qui génère la puissance de formidables apports réciproques.

this virtuous circle of gifts/giving

My comment:

I think the phrase "spirale vertueuse" can be considered as the opposite (and imitation of) vicious circle.

This virtuous spiral/circle of giving/offering to others

My comment:

I'd conflate these two phrases to allow the verb rather than the noun. 'Gifts' doesn't work for me, but using a verb form would reflect the dynamic sense of the process.

I agree: this virtuous spiral of giving (not "offering" - to offer something is not the same as to give it, and "to others" not nec.)

Sorry, Amanda: I had not seen your second suggestion_ circle. I prefer circle to spiral as it is an imitation of vicious circle.

I agree Serge, but in this case I think the spiral is better as a circle is closed, whereas a spiral can continue...

Virtuous spiral is fine - it's actually been around since the 1920s according to Oxford.
