I just can't the gist of this sentence: 'Il est vrai que Jean n’avait jamais bien pu supporter l’alcool ; encore aurait-il fallu que le boisson en contienne.'

That's one possible interpretation. It's a bit hard without much context. I think it's a little sarcastic and that the guy only had to think there's alcohol in his drink to be affected. Try a translation along those lines, preferably closer to the text.
