Così sembre che Patrocle, ammiraglio di Seleuce I, sia stato inviato a esplorare le rive del Caspio. Ma con risultati deludenti, perché si convinse che non fosse un bacino chiuso, ma un braccio dell'oceano che circondava le terre emerse, attraverso il quale si sarebbe potuto raggiungere l'India.
