Hallo everybody, perhaps this helps: "newline" is a non-printable character in the so-called ASCII list of coded characters which includes the normal alphabet and represents a bridge between people and computers. Normal text appears, like this, as visible characters. But there are many codes which are used as commands for programs to interpret: one of them is the ASCII character #10 for "start on a new line", hence the name newline. It is similar, but not identical, to the character #13 "carriage return" (CR), which harks back to the days of typewriters. In this context NL appears to be used as a data separator to keep individual data items distinct from each other. There is very probably a standard French term for newline, unless it has (unusually) been adopted as is into French usage.
