You would use the definite article for "an" in an expression like the following: to set an example=donner l'exemple. So your question might not be as simple as some seem to think.

I agree with the answer. It is the one most used to translate that way, but remember to look at context as there are diffierent grammar rules for this usage in French. And remember gender agreement.
