If it's a sculptor or painter, it's "artist." It's "actor" or "artiste" if it has to do with "un artista de cine" or "de teatro." If it's a musician or singer, it's "artist" or "artiste." And then there are "intellectual artistes."

"Distinción" might also be translated asa "honor" or, maybe more specifically, "award."
