Barbara Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

Italian > English

Subject:

Other

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

messo le mani avanti

Context:

Qualche giorno dopo, Pession mi disse: "Badi che Alfieri le sta combinando un piattino. Io

Keywords:

...già messo le mani avanti. Ma cosa vuole, io non ho voce in capitolo con quella gente."

The answer of   See profile was rated best

[I've already] covered my back

My comment:

I also came across "to safeguard oneself" (Collins), and "play it safe" on the wordreference forum. The idea is that the narrator has done something to protect himself in the event of something negative happening in relation to "quella gente".
